Why This Cross-County Route Is Unique in Wine Country
There are dozens of balloon tours in Napa and Sonoma. There is only one that starts in Sonoma and ends in Napa.
The Wine Country Join-in Flight by Sonoma Ballooning Adventures launches from Sonoma Skypark (21870 8th St E, Sonoma) at a private airport site away from tourist traffic. From there the balloon drifts south and east with the prevailing winds over the Carneros AVA — the cool-climate wine region that straddles both counties — before landing in Napa Valley.
The route change matters for views. From the south side of the Mayacamas Mountains, you have an unobstructed panorama that includes both Sonoma's more expansive vineyard floor AND Napa's ordered estate rows — often simultaneously. On clear mornings the San Francisco skyline appears to the south, a view you cannot get from purely Napa-based flights that launch on the east side of the range.
At $325 and 4.8 stars from 268 verified reviews, this is the most-reviewed hot air balloon ride in the region. The champagne toast after landing is a genuine post-flight ritual that the Napa Valley Aloft ride doesn't include. For travelers who want the widest view and the most complete experience, this is the standout balloon ride in Napa Valley wine country.
Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Sonoma Wine Country
What You'll See — Two Counties, One Flight
The cross-county route gives you more than any single-county flight:
- Sonoma's vineyard floor — broader and more expansive than Napa's, stretching in every direction from the launch site
- The Mayacamas Mountains — the range that separates the two counties, passing beneath you as you cross from Sonoma into Napa
- Carneros AVA vineyards — the cooler, flatter wine region known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crossing the county line
- Napa Valley — the ordered rows of estates and the valley floor, visible as you approach the landing zone
- San Francisco skyline to the south — visible on clear mornings from altitude over the Carneros Valley
- San Pablo Bay — the tidal estuary at the foot of the valley, gleaming in the early light
The pilot uses different wind speeds at different altitudes to steer the balloon toward the landing zone. Watching this navigation in real time — the subtle ascents and descents that change both direction and speed — is one of the things guests consistently mention as a highlight.

How the Morning Works — Sonoma to Napa
A typical morning with Sonoma Ballooning Adventures:
- ~5:30–6:00 am: Arrive at Sonoma Skypark, 21870 8th St E, Sonoma, CA 95476. Look for the flashing yellow lights at the parking lot entrance; the flight lounge is upstairs
- ~6:00 am: Coffee, tea and snacks in the lounge while watching colorful balloons inflate on the tarmac below — the full inflation sequence is visible from the lounge window
- ~6:30 am: Pre-flight safety briefing from your pilot, then witness final inflation on the tarmac. Board the basket for a group photo before takeoff
- ~6:30–7:30 am: The flight — approximately one hour drifting south-east over Sonoma, Carneros and into Napa Valley. Pilot commentary throughout
- ~7:30 am: Landing, deflation and packing by the ground crew
- ~8:00 am: Champagne toast, pilot stories and ballooning history at landing
- ~8:30–9:00 am: Return transport to Sonoma Skypark
Important Things to Know
Before you book:
- The meeting point is Sonoma — plan transport from Napa or San Francisco (approximately 45–60 minutes from central Napa, 60–75 minutes from SF)
- Weight limit: 260 lbs per passenger. Guests over 260 lbs must purchase an extra seat for safety
- Minimum age: 8 years old / 57 inches tall — no infants or young children
- The balloon is weather-dependent: Sonoma Ballooning will reschedule if conditions are unsafe. The free cancellation window is 24 hours before departure
- Dress in layers — the Sonoma morning at 6am is typically cooler than Napa at the same time
- Closed-toe shoes are required in the basket
This tour books ahead significantly more than average — Viator data shows it's booked 37 days in advance on average. If you have a specific date during spring or harvest season, secure it a month out.
Where It Starts: Sonoma Skypark Launch Site
Who This Flight Is (and Isn't) For
The right choice for:
- Travelers who want to see BOTH Sonoma and Napa Valley from the air in a single flight
- Anyone who specifically wants a champagne toast as part of the experience
- Guests staying in Sonoma or arriving from San Francisco — the Sonoma launch is more convenient than driving to Yountville
- Larger groups — the basket holds more than the NV Aloft small-group format
Less suited to:
- Travelers staying in Napa who don't want to drive 45 minutes to Sonoma at 5:30am — the Napa Valley Aloft Yountville launch is more convenient
- Children under 8 or guests over 260 lbs without purchasing an extra seat
- Anyone who specifically wants the Yountville village atmosphere and a genuinely small group of 9
Wine Country Cross-County Balloon Flight FAQ
Does the balloon really fly from Sonoma into Napa Valley?
Yes — the route crosses county lines. You launch from Sonoma Skypark in Sonoma County, drift over the Carneros AVA (which straddles both counties), and land in Napa Valley. The exact landing spot depends on wind conditions each morning, but the cross-county route is the defining feature of this flight.
Why does it launch from Sonoma instead of Napa Valley?
The private airport site at Sonoma Skypark allows consistent morning launches with a clear flight path into Napa. Launching from the west side of the Mayacamas Mountains means the balloon drifts east with prevailing winds — the same winds that bring morning fog into Napa. The route also gives you views of both wine regions simultaneously.
Is the champagne toast included in the price?
Yes — a post-flight champagne toast is included in the $325 ticket price. It takes place at the landing site before the ground crew returns you to Sonoma Skypark. This is one of the main differences from the Napa Valley Aloft ride, which includes coffee and snacks but not a champagne toast.
Why is it booked 37 days in advance on average?
Sonoma Ballooning Adventures is the most-reviewed balloon tour in the Napa/Sonoma region, and the cross-county route is a uniquely compelling option. Spring (March–May) and harvest season (September–October) dates in particular sell out weeks ahead. If you have a specific morning in mind, book it as soon as your travel is confirmed.
What does 'Badge of Excellence' mean?
The Viator Badge of Excellence is awarded to tour operators who maintain consistently high review scores, response rates and booking completion rates on the Viator platform. It's an independent quality indicator — not paid for, based on track record.
Is a bilingual Spanish-speaking pilot available?
Yes — on request when booking. Sonoma Ballooning Adventures has bilingual pilots available for Spanish-speaking guests. Confirm when you book that you'd like a Spanish-speaking guide.
What Guests Say About the Cross-County Flight
This experience will be better than any expectation you have. So smooth, the views are like nothing you can imagine — pilot Jeff was funny and very informative on everything that was going on. Such a smooth ride. You're like a cloud floating through the beautiful sky of Sonoma. It won't be our last time flying.
Our hot air balloon experience was absolutely unforgettable. From start to finish, everything was well organized and professional. Mateo was outstanding — calm, knowledgeable and experienced. Watching the sunrise from above and floating peacefully over beautiful landscapes was truly magical.
Lovely experience and Nacho was a great pilot and storyteller. Being over vineyards is a great start to any day. I liked that the basket was divided into sections which keeps the weight balanced. Our group took photos for each other. Note: you'll be in the air for 1 hour — we traveled 5 miles based on the wind. Lighted signs at the parking lot were very helpful in the dark.
Best birthday gift. Seeing the beautiful sunrise and views was incredible. Our pilot Mateo was awesome — the ride was not scary at all, in fact it was smooth and safe. Worth doing this activity if you're considering it. My partner was afraid of heights but once we started going up the fear went away.
